October jazz treats in Leeds

Seven Jazz are really pleased to present our new evening series and Sunday events at Seven Arts Leeds this October. Ben Clatworthy and Alice Zawadski headline (pictured), Phil Meadows Group "Lifecycles Tour" and Bad Ass Brass will be hugely popular too. But let's start with one of our new acoustic unplugged gigs...

Kumpus Quartet @SevenArts 
Sunday afternoon October 4, 1.30-4pm, £7/5 conc
Alice Higgins (vocals) Conall Mulvenna (giuitar) Will Blackstone (trumpet) Roz MacDonald (bass). Leeds music graduates and members of the LUU Big band that played at Seven Arts in February "Kumpus Quartet" enjoy a wide range of music. Their programme includes songs by Victor Young, McCoy Tyner, Frank Foster, Sigmund Romberg and more. A "Seven Jazz Unplugged" gig.

Ben Clatworthy Quartet @Seven Arts
Thursday evening October 8, 7.45-11pm, £16/14 conc
Benn Clatworthy sax, Simon Thorpe bass, John Donaldson piano Matt Home drums. We like Benn! Los Angeles based saxman Benn Clatworthy just gets better and better. A member of the Horace Silver band in the 1980’s, he has just about played with everyone who’s anyone on the US jazz scene. "Some of the most emotive and creative jazz this side of Sonny Rollins"- Edinburgh Evening News. Seven Jazz introduces The Georgina Barr/Calvin Travers group in support with the music of Norah Jones from 8pm

Phil Meadows Group "Lifecycles Tour" @ SevenArts
Sunday afternoon October 11, 1.30-4pm, £7/5 conc
Phil Meadows alto/soprano sax, composer, Laura Jurd trumpet, Elliot Galvin  piano, Flo Moore bass, Simon Roth drums. What an absolute pleasure it is to have this group of the finest musicians in the UK today - and on a Sunday lunchtime! New music and fun times are ahead - really hope you can join us!

Bad Ass Brass @SevenArts
Sunday afternoon October 18,, £7/5 conc
Jon Stokes trombone/vocals, Jean-Paul Gervasoni, Paul Munday & Gavin Broom trumpets, Sam Bullard and Gemma Moore saxophones, Mike Poyser sousaphone Jimmy Norden drums. Firm favourites on Jazz FM and performing to sell-out crowds Bass Ass Brass are a unique fusion of styles, creating a jazz brass band experience like no other. A "Seven Jazz Unplugged" gig.

Alice Zawadski @SevenArts 
Thursday evening October 22, 7.45-11.00pm, £16/14 conc
Alice Zadawski violin and vocals, Alex Munk guitar Peter Lee piano Tom McCreadie bass John Scott drums. Alice is a brilliant young jazz vocalist/violinist who was nominated for best female jazz vocalist in the 2015 Parliamentary Awards. Her influences include New Orleans soul, classical training and improvised music. “She is a genuine original” – John Fordham, The Guardian, “Uncategorisable, beautiful – a real force to be reckoned with”-Jamie Cullum, BBC Radio 2. Seven Jazz introduces the Ben Powling/Will Powell group in support from 8pm

Jazz Jam @Inkwell 
Sunday afternoon October 25: 1.30-4pm £7/5 conc
Bring your horn, brush up those vocal chords or just watch. Come along and enjoy the fun at Inkwell! Concessions includes performers.

Seven Jazz Workshops and Choir
There are three instrumental Seven Jazz workshops during October - Saturday 10 October (tutor Dominic Moore, to be held in Meanwood), and Saturday 17 October and Saturday 24 October (tutor Tom Sharp to be held @Seven Arts) all 2-4pm.  Come and learn to play jazz! Then the Seven Jazz Voices choir continues to flourish under the tutorship Tessa Smith on Monday 5th or 19th October 7-9pm- join in @St Matthew's Church Hall, Wood Lane, Chapel Allerton, Leeds LS7 3QF.
