Jazz-at-heart presents a gig in aid of the charity SKIP (www.skipperu.org), which works for families and children in the North West of Peru (Trujillo) and is a force for good in their lives. This gig will not only raise money for a good cause, but also showcases THREE bands from the thriving community jazz scene in Leeds.
We’ll be starting right on time (7.30 pm) for once, so do come down and support us. Friday November 27th (Tickets £8 /£6 conc)
Playing a range of swing and Latin tunes that will be familiar to most, this is the first ‘proper’ outing for Skip-a-Beat, which was formed a couple of years ago, to support the charity SKIP, which does such good work supporting children and families in Peru. This band is a result of the strong adult jazz education scene in Leeds.
Lesley Jeffries – trumpet; Jan Stacey – tenor sax; Al Howell – alto sax; Joe Kent – piano; Gordon Hollingsworth – drums; Michael Clark – bass.
Quiet Band (8.30)
Playing gentler tunes and ballads, this band is going to feature Will Powell’s new nylon string acoustic guitar! A mixture of familiar and original tunes, many of them by people called Kenny (Wheeler, Barron, Dorham), we are promised a lovely interlude of gentle tunes.
Will Powell – guitar; John Murdoch – sax; Dom Moore – drums; Tom Welsh – bass
Marlena Kelli Quartet (9.30)
The quartet play classic blues jazz and swing music. Marlena Kelli is a young versatile singer on the Yorkshire Jazz scene who has appeared with a variety of blues, gypsy jazz and big bands. Will Powell on guitar is a popular Leeds guitarist and bandleader, bassist Steve Crocker is the brains behind Seven Jazz as well as having been a bassist with people like Spike Robinson, Kenny Davern, Bob Wilbur, Jimmy Witherspoon and Red Holloway. Dom Moore on drums is a jazz educator who runs a popular Jazz Workshop on Meanwood, and is also a mean jazz guitarist himself!
