John Taylor RIP

Sad to pass on the news that pianist John Taylor, a towering figure in European jazz, died last night, Friday 17th July. He had a sudden heart attack while performing in Stephane Kerecki's band at the French Saveurs Jazz Festival. He was resuscitated on the spot but died later in hospital.

Dave Holland (@TheDaveHolland) tweeted at 6:40 pm on Sat, Jul 18, 2015: “The wonderful pianist & composer John Taylor passed away last night. Friends and colleagues since '65. Much loved.” http://t.co/qefdYl3ge2

He's delighted us with his music at jazz venues in the North throughout his long career. Here's some clips-  with his wonderful trio with Palle Danielson and Martin France at Wakefield Jazz Club 2/12/11 playing "Afterthought" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40Me2BdwyXc; at Seven Arts in Leeds 4/10/12 solo playing "Ambleside" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wERPbYdPyJo and most recently - John on 15 January this year with Julian Seigel and Diana Torto again with Seven Jazz in Leeds playing "Jenny Wren" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfm1yxLdEJA

A tragedy for the jazz world - a respected, loved, hugely influential figure over half a century, both as player and teacher. A fantastic musician and a lovely guy. No more music like this - John playing  "How Deep is the Ocean": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygSJLzLzpi4
