Phil Donkin and Alex Garnett
Chris DeSaram writes
Continuing our theme of booking bands led by bass players (viz Alec Dankworth 28.11.14) we bring three and a half more such in our New Year programme. We kick off with Zoe Gilby (16 Jan) whose band is led by bass playing husband Andy (reet) Champion. Andrew Cleyndert leads a band with Ross Stanley on piano (27 Feb), Alison Rayner (UK's foremost woman bass player) brings A R Q with Deidre Cartwright on guitar plugging her debut CD "August" (20 Feb) but the returning star of international jazz bass is Mackem Phil Donkin seen after a long break living in New York and then Berlin (13 Mar). His band is 50% American and there's another American in Alex Garnett's Bunch of Fives (23 Jan) - Tim Armacost on second tenor.
We have three more singers - Lauren Kinsella is with Laura Jurd's Human Spirit (30 Jan) and both Esther Bennett and Beverley Beirne join Duncan Lamont to present the programme "Beyond the Rainbow" (20 Mar). David Newton's new "Big Screen" trio (13 Feb) and Northern Line guitar giants Stuart McCallum and Mike Walker (6 Mar) fill our last two slots before Easter.
From Mainstream to Contemporary, with a host of great music in every genre, our programme lives up to our reputation for presenting varied excellence.
Look out for Mike Janisch, Tom Farmer, Chris Batchelor, Diane McLouglhin and even Alan Barnes (Sat 7 Feb) among the other leading jazzers to be heard among these 10 bands.
